Mass spectrometry alone is a powerful tool for many analytical applications. With the invention of electrospray ionisation it became feasible to couple liquid chromatography directly to the mass spectrometer, LC-MS. This allows recording of molecular masses and structural information by fragmentation during a chromatographic separation in real time.
In case of Proteomics application LC-MS can generate hundreds and even thousands of spectra with sequence information about the proteins in the sample.
This technique is not only applicable for Proteomics applications, it is applied to a wide range of analyses, like drug metabolites, food contaminations, forensics, environmental, natural metabolites, to name only a few.
The quality of the analysis is dependent on the separation step and the set-up of the mass spectrometer. For a comprehensive analysis of any complex samples, both parts have to be optimised.
